Wan Fung Art Gallery is proud to present the exhibition ‘Good Old Days - Rare Collection of Hunan Fine Brushwork Paintings’ from 21 March to 3 April 2009. It will exhibit 62 fine brushwork paintings* by 26 remarkable artists from Hunan Province.
Surrounded by mountains and hills, Hunan is an inland province in the mid-southern part of China. Thirty years ago before it was opened up, transportation and public access was rare and so a simple, honest, and unspoiled climate was preserved. With no noise and annoyance from the outside world, the artists were then patient enough to devote themselves to fine brushwork painting which demands great care and attention.
Today, many Hong Kong people are depressed and losing confidence because of the economic downturn. Wan Fung Art Gallery specially presents 62 pieces of such rare, fine brushwork paintings by a group of talented and skillful Hunan artists created decades ago. Treasured for more than twenty years, these paintings now bring us back the memories of the unsophisticated, healthy lifestyle in China in the 1970s. The simple and honest, diligent and contented, kind and caring, family oriented and peace-loving nature of Chinese people are fully described with their masterly strokes and delineation. Today, we are in times of change and challenge, uncertainty and perplexity. This rare and exquisite collection will bring to us significant inspirations, and the everlasting glory of human nature will bring to us a wonderful dawn in life.
* Fine Brushwork painting is a kind of Chinese Painting which uses lines to delineate or construct the forms and structures of objects. While the lines are variegated with different feels and rhythms, the paintings are mostly detailed, meticulous, carefully and neatly done. Hunan artists are well recognized as the most outstanding fine-brushwork painting artists in China.
