22.05.2010 – 01.06.2010

(May 2010, Hong Kong) Wan Fung Art Gallery is pleased to present to you the "Time Variant on Ink- Exhibition of Koon Wai Bong, Zhou Jin and Wong Hau Kwei, winners of Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Awards 2009" from 22 May to 1 Jun, 2010. More than 30 outstanding exhibits will be showcased. The exhibition is held in conjunction with the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Awards 2009 to promote Hong Kong and Chinese ink artists.
This exhibition explores the development of contemporary Chinese painting. Chinese painting has two thousand years of history. While it has been a media of culture and history, both in the past and present, it is now facing severe competition from different contemporary art forms, especially under the trend of globalization in Hong Kong. Whether traditional ink painting can transform and keep up with time depends on the contemporary ink artists. Wong Hau Kwei, Zhou Jin and Koon Wai Bong are no doubt among the top outstanding contemporary ink artists. Although Wong did not receive systematic training as pupil or in any institute, he has got delicate skills in drawing landscapes. Zhou and Koon, on the other hand, had received institutional education in Mainland and Hong Kong, respectively. Zhou is well regarded for portraying swimmers. Koon''''''''s artworks are more abstract and figural. Althrough they have different background and painting style, with excellent skills and techniques, all three of them can paint any theme with ease.
The multicultural environment of Hong Kong provides a fertile field to cultivate quality artists. Wong Hau Kwei, Zhou Jin and Koon Wai Bong are all renowned artists in the Hong Kong art field. Wong is well acclaimed both in Hong Kong and China, and a number of his artworks were selected and displayed in the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial and the National Artworks Exhibition. Zhou and Koon, besides being an artist, are university professors dedicated to art teaching. Wan Fung Art Gallery would like to invite all art lovers to the "Time Variant on Ink- Exhibition of Koon Wai Bong, Zhou Jin and Wong Hau Kwei" to enjoy the selected masterpieces. Wong Hau Kwei

Male, born in Chongqing, Sichuan Province in 1946.
He was graduated from China Textile University in Shanghai in 1969 and immigrated to Hong Kong as an entreprener in 1978. Wong started his creation of ink and wash landscapes in the 1990s.
Wong mainly does ink painting of landscape, Sai Kung, which is the place that he lives, has become his inspiration and source material of his creation. He likes to travel a lot and sketch from real life. Also, his care for what is happening in the society has helped him inject the modern elements to his works. He likes to paint on tall, narrow roll, with composition of the breathtaking nature from a distant or overlooking view. He also uses short and small strokes to form the objects, in contrast with the long, large roll, which impose a visual extension effect on the audience. He is free from traces and traditions of art school, so his works are fresh, original and a brand new kind of the ‘new ink style’.
His works were selected in Hong Kong Biennial Art Exhibition in 1998, 2001, 2003 and 2005, the Ink and Wash Landscape Painting Exhibition of Hong Kong Scenery held in London and Hong Kong in 2002, Exhibition of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Invited Artists, the 9th and 10th National Art Exhibition, Shenzhen International Ink and Wash Painting Biennial Exhibition, 1st Fu Baoshi Award — Nanjing Ink and Wash Painting Media Triennial Exhibition, etc.
Wong’s work “The Canoe”, “Destiny”, “A Sketch of Qingshuiju”, “Sailing through the Sanxia Gorge” have been awarded in many exhibitions. His works are collected by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the China Museum of Art, Shenzhen Art Academy, Langham Hotel, etc.
