Zhao Chengxiang
Female, born in 1953, is a native of Shantou, Guangdong Province. Her pen name is Cheng Zi. She is a member of the Guangdong Artists Association and China Papercutting Society.
Most of Cheng Zi’s paintings depict the daily lives of Chinese people. There are usually no human present in her paintings - only simple scenes or objects. The past helps Cheng understand the truth of life. The simple objects and the quiet yet interesting lives of her subjects give her a certain spiritual satisfaction. She prefers to draw traditional subjects, using modern means to express her thoughts. Viewers can imagine people living in her paintings, such as kind old men, quiet young girls and curious children. Viewers can imagine themselves to be the user or owners of her painted objects. For example, they can see themselves sitting in an old chair, reading an old Chinese book as the sunshine breaks through the window in the afternoon. A few lotus stems from a blue and white porcelain vase and the air is filled with fragrance of the flowers and the jasmine tea... Cheng also loves Ming Dynasty furniture, so it often plays a major role in her paintings. The furniture’s line and elegant yet lively style well represent the ancient Chinese society.
Her paintings, paper-cutting and creative design have been exhibited and won many prizes in many exhibitions. She has held solo exhibitions in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Wuhan, Guangzhou, etc. Her works are collected by Chinese Art Museum, Chinese Art Research Institute, Zhejiang Art Museum, Hubei Art Museum and private collectors all over the world.
